South Portland Joins Greater Portland Metro

South Portland has officially joined the Greater Portland Transit District (Greater Portland Metro), marking a major step forward in regional transit integration.

On October 24, 2024, Metro’s Board of Directors approved the merger of South Portland’s city-run bus system into Metro, following the South Portland City Council’s vote on October 8, 2024, to become a full member of the district.

Effective December 29, 2024, Greater Portland Metro took over operations of South Portland’s bus routes—Routes 21, 24A, and 24B.

This transition improves coordination, simplifies the rider experience, and strengthens regional connections. Riders benefit from a unified transit system, while Metro continues to enhance service, infrastructure, and amenities across all member communities.

As part of the merger:

  • All South Portland bus operators were hired by Metro.
  • Operators retained their seniority for pay and benefits.
  • Drivers have the opportunity to continue operating South Portland routes.
  • Operators received increased compensation as Metro employees.

South Portland now holds four seats on the Metro Board of Directors, giving the city a direct role in shaping service decisions and future improvements.

There are no immediate schedule changes planned for South Portland routes. The most visible updates are Metro branding on buses, stop signs, and printed schedules.

With South Portland’s addition, Greater Portland Metro now serves eight member communities: Brunswick, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, and Yarmouth. The Metro Board consists of 19 representatives, appointed by each member municipality.

This merger supports a more efficient, coordinated, and sustainable public transportation system for the entire region.
