Greater Portland Metro Receives $4.25 Million Federal Grant to Upgrade Bus Fleet

December 1, 2025

Greater Portland Metro has been awarded $4,248,542 through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s FY25 Buses and Bus Facilities Program. The funding will replace aging buses and expand transit service in the region.

The grant will cover six 35-foot buses: three to replace vehicles that have reached the end of their service life and three additional buses to support planned service expansion to Scarborough and potentially South Portland.

“These buses will allow us to retire vehicles that are beyond their useful life and expand service in the region,” said Glenn Fenton, Executive Director of Greater Portland Metro. “This award reinforces how essential predictable, long-term investment is to keep Maine’s transit systems strong and aligned with economic growth.”

Federal support helps ensure the transit system can:

  • Connect workers to jobs in sectors like healthcare, hospitality, education, and retail.
  • Improve access to childcare, healthcare, and training programs.
  • Reduce congestion, parking demand, and emissions.
  • Support local businesses by increasing foot traffic along transit routes.

The new buses will also improve reliability, lower operating costs, and provide a better experience for riders. The expansion into Scarborough in 2026 will offer enhanced service for commuters, students, and families.

This project reflects strong regional and federal partnership, including support from the Greater Portland Council of Governments, local transit partners, and the Town of Scarborough.

Greater Portland Metro operates 11 local routes and two regional routes connecting communities including Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth, Yarmouth, Freeport, Brunswick, Gorham, and South Portland. It is the largest public transit provider in Maine.
